More than 1,800 would-be migrants were rescued yesterday in the Strait of Sicily in an operation coordinated by the Italian coast guard. Multiple rescue ships, including EU vessels, were involved in separate rescue operations involving eight migrant boats, some of them inflatables.

In other news, after a video of a “citizens’ arrest” of migrants went viral in Bulgaria, the Bulgarian government says it will crack down on volunteer civilian patrols that have been interdicting migrants on the borders and along the coast.…

…On this day in 1919 Eugene V. Debs was imprisoned at the Atlanta Federal Penitentiary in Atlanta, Georgia, for speaking out against the draft during World War I. He was arrested and convicted under the Sedition Act of 1918 which was blatantly unconstitutional and was rammed through by Wilson. Although this was a travesty, Debbs got what he deserved because he was a rabid communist rabble rouser. His sentence was commuted by Harding in 1921. Republicans were bitterly opposed to the Sedition Act of 1918.

…On this day in 1831 soldiers marching on the Broughton Suspension Bridge in Manchester, England caused it to collapse. This caused royal Army to issue orders that when marching across a bridge to break step. That practice has also been adopted by the American military.

A culture-enriching Labour councilor in Luton in the UK has been suspended by her party for tweeting that Adolf Hitler was the greatest man in history. Miss Aysegul Gurbuz also said that Iran should use its nuclear weapons to “wipe Israel off the map”.

In other news, migrants on the border between Greece and Macedonia stormed the border fence en masse in a coordinated effort, attempting to break it down. Macedonian police threw stun grenades and fired tear gas and rubber bullets at the rioters in an effort to keep them from breaking through.…
