At least 55 Iraqi soldiers were killed today in three suicide bombings in al-Anbar Province. The deadly attacks came as the Iraqi military attempted to recapture Ramadi from the Islamic State.
In other news, an unexploded WW2 bomb was safely detonated in Cologne after the largest postwar evacuation in the city cleared the area of 20,000 people.

The Greek interior minister says that it is not possible for his country to make its next debt payment to the IMF by the deadline next month; the money simply isn’t there. Greece is looking to make an arrangement with its creditors in order to get the next tranche of bailout money. Meanwhile, the latest polls say that the Greek public supports the government’s anti-austerity policies, but wants to retain the euro as its currency.
In other news, Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter says that the fall of Ramadi was the fault of the Iraqi military. According to him, Iraqi forces lacked the will to hold their positions.

In Tensta, a culturally enriched suburb of Stockholm, a mob of “youths” attacked a police patrol with rocks and Molotov cocktails. Police were forced to fire warning shots into the crowd. The rioters, said to be mainly Somalis and Kurds, were apparently upset that police had started cracking down on crime in their neighborhood.
In other news, the Islamic State claimed responsibility for a suicide bombing at a Shi’ite mosque in Saudi Arabia, and promised more attacks targeting Shi’ites.

A 19-year-old Turkish woman has been shot in the head to punish her for participating in a talent show. She is now in the hospital, in critical condition. The victim had reportedly received death threats, and her family objected to her participation in the contest. A man has been arrested in connection with the shooting.
In other news, several EU countries have come out in opposition to Brussels’ plan for mandatory migrant quotas for member states. Among the opponents are Britain, France, Denmark, Finland, and Spain.

Mujahideen for the Islamic State succeeded in overrunning the city of Ramadi in western Iraq, driving out the last of the Iraqi military forces. However, the Syrian army managed to push back ISIS forces from Palmyra, so that the UNESCO world heritage site is safe for the moment.
In other news, a few days after a fierce battle between police and KLA terrorists in the Macedonian town of Kumanovo, thousands of demonstrators marched in the capital, Skopje. The protesters were supporters of the opposition, and demanded the resignation of the current government.

Abu Sayyaf, a senior commander for the Islamic State, was reportedly killed by U.S. special forces in Iraq. The commandos who killed Mr. Sayyaf were attempting to capture him, but he resisted. His wife, known as Umm Sayyaf, was captured and is said to be in Iraqi military detention.
