…On this day in 1814 British troops torched the Library of Congress, United States Treasury, Department of War, and other public buildings. Supposedly the attack was a retaliation for the recent American destruction of Port Dover in Upper Canada (Toronto). Their intent was to burn the entire city but a rapidly developing thunderstorm put out the fires before most of Washington was burned.
