…On this day in 1814 in the War of 1812, the British attacked and failed to capture Baltimore. During the battle, Francis Scott Key composed his poem "Defense of Fort McHenry", which was later set to music of "To Anacreon in Heaven", with various lyrics, which was already popular in the United States. The poem with music was renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", and it soon became a well-known American patriotic song. It became the United States' national anthem by act of congress in 1931.…
