…On this day in 1740 Georgia colony governor James Oglethorpe began an unsuccessful attempt to take Spanish Florida during the Siege of St. Augustine. During various "deals and transfers" along with the US war on the Seminoles who aided Great Britain during the war of 1812 the US acquired more and more of Florida. In 1821 Spain ceded the remainder of Florida to the US.
