…On this day in 1823 a fire almost completely destroyed the ancient Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls in Rome, Italy. The church was originally constructed on the site of the grave of St. Paul around 370 AD. The fire was caused by a negligent workman pouring molten lead on the roof for repairs. It was rebuilt and reopened in 1840. Although outside, The Vatican it is owned and maintained by the Vatican.
