…On this day in 1789 at the request of Congress, George Washington proclaimed a Thanksgiving Day for that year. This started the Thanksgiving Day tradition in the US. Some localities had already celebrated a harvest festival at various locations in the Fall. Those became the nationwide Thanksgiving Day. But it was not yet a national holiday every year everywhere.
