…On this day in 1863 the New York City draft riots began. Opponents of conscription began three days of rioting which would be later regarded as the worst in United States history. They had two major beefs. They were angry that the law allowed more wealthy people to buy their way out of the draft and they were opposed to the war with the South as well because NY's economy was tied to the South at the time.…
