…On this day in 1919 the Eighteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution, requiring Prohibition in the United States one year after ratification it was ratified by the State legislaters. It was in effect for 19 years and was repealed with ratification by the States' voters directly in 1933 by ratification of the 21st amendment. Ratification by the legislatures would have failed since they were still controlled by the prohibitionists.
