…On this day in 1853 the US completed the Gadsden Purchase to get land from Mexico to facilitate railroad building in a Southwest route to CA from New Mexico. It purchased approximately 30M acres of land, mostly desert, for $10M in gold. This was the last major addition of land to the continental US.
