…Dewey Police Department Sgt. Tim Stringer was at the Dewey school directing traffic and greeting children Wednesday morning when he said was approached by a couple and their preschool-aged son. He reportedly told the family “good morning” and said they responded, but then the father, in reference to Stringer, told the little boy, “If you don’t behave, he’ll bust a cap in your a—.”

Stinger said he was surprised not only by the man’s use of profanity to the child, but also the assertion that the boy should fear the police.

“I proceeded to let the dad know I didn’t appreciate what he said in no uncertain terms, but I did it so I wouldn’t scare the child,” he said, adding that the father’s assertion is the opposite of what he wants children, especially young children, to take away from an encounter with law enforcement.

“The message I want to get to the parents is, don’t make us the boogie man, because you hate what you fear,” he said. “Most people who are afraid of snakes, hate snakes. … If you teach a child to fear something, they will eventually learn to hate it.” …
