The German Social Democratic Party (SPD) is concerned about PEGIDA, AfD, and other far-right groups, and thinks they should be put under government surveillance. According to a paper issued in advance of an SPD conference in Berlin, anti-immigration groups need to be watched because of increased attacks on refugees and asylum centers.
In other news, the prime minister of Slovakia says that his country is sending 25 police officers to assist Macedonia with the policing of its borders.…

More than 200 Eritrean migrants staged a demonstration on the Italian island of Lampedusa to protest the mandatory fingerprinting program imposed by the Italian migration authorities. The Eritreans reportedly wish to move to some other part of Europe besides Italy, and are concerned that being fingerprinted may hurt their chances to do so.
In other news, photos of the Little Mermaid (havfruen in Danish), the iconic statue in the harbor at Copenhagen, has been banned Facebook for being “too sexual”.…
Jozias van Aartsen, the mayor of The Hague, has criticized the Dutch government’s proposed ban on Salafist groups in the Netherlands. He says it is not the job of the state to determine which groups might espouse violent ideologies, and besides, the Dutch constitution guarantees both freedom of religion and freedom of speech.
In other news, Michael McFeat, the Scotsman who was arrested in Kyrgyzstan for insulting the national dish (a horsemeat sausage) by likening it to the generative organ of a stallion, has been expelled from the country.…
On this day in 1949 Harry Truman unveiled his proposed "Fair Deal" Program. It was a 21 point program of almost all new socialist programs similar to FDR's new deal. And among these 21 points was a call for "universal healthcare". IOW, Truman really was a continuation of FDR.…
When the owner of a petting zoo in the Netherlands discovered that a group of Muslims had taken over its public space for prayers, he ejected them from the premises, prompting accusations of “Islamophobia”. There’s no word on whether the men in the group availed themselves of the zoo animals for carnal relations.
Speaking of farm animals, a Scottish mine worker in Kyrgyzstan got himself in trouble for ridiculing the country’s national dish. Michael McFeat posted a photo on Facebook of diners queuing for “chuchuk”, a horsemeat sausage, and the photo’s caption compared the culinary delicacy to the masculine equipment of a stallion. The other mine workers were so angry they called a strike, and Mr. McFeat was arrested.
In other news, Saudi Arabia has severed diplomatic ties with Iran after its embassy in Tehran was sacked for the Saudi execution of the Shi’ite Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr. …

A mob of angry protesters attacked, ransacked, and torched the Saudi embassy in Tehran. The demonstrators were enraged by the death of a prominent Shi’ite cleric in Saudi Arabia, who was executed today along with 46 other convicted defendants.
In other news, a Moroccan man was deported from Italy for saying that he planned to blow up Rome. He also said that Rome would be the starting place for the Islamic conquest of Europe.…
The news reports about the National Security Agency snooping on foreign leaders show a White House intent on abusing NSA capabilities for political purposes. As a veteran of the George W. Bush White House, I’m persuaded that had we done this, the Democrats in Congress would have called it a major scandal and held endless hearings designed to attack the administration.…

At least three terror attacks occurred in the West on New Year’s Day. That’s not counting the Amish terrorists who set fire to the skyscraper in Dubai; technically speaking, that happened on New Year’s Eve. Besides, it’s not in the West.
The first attack was at a street café in Tel Aviv, where a man opened fire on patrons with an automatic weapon, killing two people and wounding seven others. The perpetrator is still at large. Police are mystified as to his motive, although a Koran was reportedly found in his backpack.
The second attack also occurred in Tel Aviv, when a kinetic activist with a knife stabbed two people to death outside a synagogue. The perpetrator was restrained by passersby and is now in custody.
The third attack was at a mosque in France. A North African man drove his car into a group of soldiers guarding the mosque, lightly injuring one of them. The driver was shot by one of the soldiers, but not killed, and is now in custody. His motive remains unknown, but according to at least one report, he shouted “Allahu akhbar” as he drove his car into the soldiers. …
Well, New Year’s Eve went off without any terrorist attacks (so far — Chicago and L.A. are still counting down as I write this). The Munich threat didn’t materialize, and the Dubai skyscraper fire seems to be the worst incident — a terror attack by Amish extremists, according to some sources.

In migration news, Finland has closed its border with Russia in northern Lapland to bicycle traffic, and will only allow migrants using motor vehicles to cross it.
In other news, the man who was arrested on suspicion of setting the mosque fire in Houston is a long-time attendee of the mosque, and is said to be a devout Muslim who prayed there five times a day. …

The Islamic State has issued new regulations, in the form of a fatwa, containing protocols concerning the raping of sex-slaves. Among other things, the rules forbid raping pregnant or menstruating women. They also detail the procedures to be followed when a slave that has two or more owners is to be sold.
In other news, the Norwegian government is tightening its rules on asylum seekers, and will turn back those who have no visas. The new policy is particularly aimed at “refugees” crossing the border from Sweden.…

Under a new deal reached by Central American countries, thousands of Cuban migrants stranded in Costa Rica will be allowed to continue their journey northwards to the United States. Under the terms of the deal, the migrants will be flown to El Salvador, where they will board buses to travel to Mexico, and ultimately to the USA.
In other news, a German man was killed by flying shrapnel after he and two accomplices blew up a condom machine in the town of Schoeppingen. …
One miner was killed and four escaped when a gypsum mine in Shandong Province in China collapsed. Two days later, seventeen miners remain trapped underground as rescuers attempt to reach them. The mine’s owner committed suicide earlier today by jumping into a well at the mine.
In other news, forty-three propane tanks of various sizes were stolen from an industrial facility in northeastern Philadelphia.…

At least seven people were killed by tornadoes as violent weather struck the Dallas area. Five of those killed in Garland were thought to have been blown off the interstate in their vehicle. Meanwhile, wildfires are ravaging California and Australia, with more than 100 homes destroyed along the coastline in Victoria.
In other news, Afghan, Eritrean, and Syrian migrants housed in a hotel above the Arctic Circle in Swedish Lapland are unhappy with the extremely cold weather and the lack of sunlight. In those latitudes the sun disappeared six weeks ago and will not return until February.…
