The Oklahoma Highway Patrol had a news conference Monday to dispel rumors about the functionality of its card readers.

Oklahoma Department of Public Safety Commissioner Michael Thompson said since the Electronic Recovery and Access to Data (ERAD) machines were introduced a month ago, they have not been used to seize any funds.

“So, contrary to the propaganda that we're doing a swipe and seize and taking everyone's money, that's simply not true,” Thompson said.

Oklahoma Highway Patrol Chief Rick Adams emphasized that to use the card readers, troopers must have probable cause to scan anyone's card.…

Not as reassuring as they might hope.

…Oklahoma Highway Patrol has a device that also allows them to seize money in your bank account or on prepaid cards.… If a trooper suspects you may have money tied to some type of crime, the highway patrol can scan any cards you have and seize the money.

"We're gonna look for different factors in the way that you're acting,” Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lt. John Vincent said. “We're gonna look for if there's a difference in your story. If there's someway that we can prove that you're falsifying information to us about your business."

Troopers insist this isn't just about seizing cash.…

Of course it's not just about seizing cash - it's also about authoritarianism and violation of rights.

The state of Oklahoma officially recognized the Libertarian Party Monday.… Oklahoma State Election Board Secretary Paul Ziriax said… “This means Oklahomans can register as members of the Libertarian Party, and candidates can run as Libertarian for all partisan offices in the state. The Libertarian Party also will receive a ballot line for President and Vice President in November’s General Election.” …

My first Presidential vote (and at least one other) were for the LP candidate. Now? Too little, too late - I didn't leave them as much as they left me. However, I'm glad they got certification. For political partying's sake.

Liquor stores could sell refrigerated, high-point beer under legislation approved Wednesday by the Oklahoma House… House members voted 68-21 for the Senate-passed measure, which now goes to a joint House-Senate conference committee where it may undergo major changes before lawmakers seek final passage, said its author, Rep. Glen Mulready, a Tulsa Republican. "There's great demands coming for changes in our liquor laws," Mulready said. He said lawmakers should engage the consumer-driven appetite for convenient access to beer and wine.

On May 26, 1978, Hughes was among several troopers involved in a gunbattle with several escapees from the Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, known as the Caddo-Kenific Incident. OHP Lt. Pat Grimes and troopers Pappy Summers and Billy Young were shot and killed in the shootout, while Hughes was wounded. He survived the injuries, and continued to serve in the OHP until his retirement as a lieutenant/troop commander in 1987. "Lieutenant Hughes and the men that died and responded to Caddo-Kenefic in 1978 will always be remembered by the men and women of the Oklahoma Highway Patrol as the standard for courage" OHP Chief Kerry Pettingill said in a statement. "It is a sad day anytime we lose a member of the OHP family."

She was lobbying against House Bill 3384, which would require schools to ascertain the legal immigration status of students, report that to the State Department of Education and make a determination as to the impact on educating U.S. citizen students. The measure would result in districts having to hire legal consultants on immigration to determine the status of a child, according to the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund. Sen. Sykes, R-Moore, is a sponsor of the bill.
