Being Human
This past week, I actually had a student come forward after a university chapel service and complain because he felt “victimized” by a sermon on the topic of 1 Corinthians 13. It appears that this young scholar felt offended because a homily on love made him feel bad for not showing love. In his mind, the speaker was wrong for making him, and his peers, feel uncomfortable.
I’m not making this up.…

On Sunday, California Governor Jerry Brown vetoed a bill that would have effectively nullified in practice some Food and Drug Administration (FDA) rules that prevent terminally-ill patients from accessing experimental treatments. … “This is a baffling veto,” Tenth Amendment Center national communications director Mike Maharrey said. “Why in the world would you wait to see if the FDA program works? Of course it won’t work. Gov. Brown is basically putting people’s lives in the hands of the equivalent of the DMV.” …

In Greensboro, EPA-funded contractors grading a toxic 19th-century cotton mill site struck a water main, sending the deadly sediment into a nearby creek. Though that accident took place five months ago, the hazard continues as heavy storms — one hit the area Tuesday — wash more soil into the creek.
The sediment flows carry dangerous mercury, lead, arsenic and chromium downstream to Lake Oconee and then to the Oconee River — home to many federally and state protected species.
Lead in the soil at the project site is 20,000 times higher than federal levels established for drinking water…

…CrowdMed founder Jared Heyman tells KRMG about 15,000 medical detectives help patients whose doctors can't give them a diagnosis.
"If you're a patient, and you've been suffering for months, or often years, with some kind of unresolved medical condition, and you've often seen several doctors and had all these tests run, and nobody can figure out what's going on, we provide a place where you can submit your case online," Heyman said.
"We've proven that using this crowdsourcing approach, we can solve many, many cases that individual doctors could not, and relatively quickly and inexpensively," he added.
He said there's been a "mixed reaction" from physicians.…
