BARTLESVILLE, Oklahoma - A Bartlesville conservation organization responsible for saving the southern bald eagle from extinction is now facing extinction itself.

The George Miksch Sutton Avian Research Center found out this week that because of state budget cuts, close to a million dollars in funding from the University of Oklahoma is stopping on June 30. That's at least 80 percent of the Sutton Center's budget.

That means most staff positions would go, along with Sutton's popular traveling wild bird show that has brought eagles, owls and hawks to hundreds of local schools. …

It would be best if they could get reliable funding from some of those private nature conservation groups rather than depending on government.

Andrew Griffin, Independent (UK) • Fri 2016 Mar 4, 6:24pm

New footage shows chimpanzees engaging in bizarre behaviour — which might be a form of sacred ritual that could show the beginnings of a kind of religious belief.

Chimpanzees in West Africa have been spotted banging and throwing rocks against trees and throwing them into gaps inside, leading to piles of rocks. Those rocks do not appear to be for any functional purpose — and might be an example of an early version of ritual behaviour.…

Man’s best friend has a clear strategy for dealing with angry owners — look away.

New research shows that dogs limit their eye contact with angry humans, even as they tend to stare down upset canines. The scientists suggest this may be an attempt to appease humans, that evolved as dogs were domesticated and benefited from avoiding conflicts with humans.…

…Dogs became self-domesticated as they slowly evolved from wolves who joined humans in the hunt, according to the first study of dog genomes.

And it shows that the first domesticated dogs came about 33,000 years ago … in southern East Asia… and migrated to Europe, rather than descending from domesticated European wolves 10,000 years ago as had previously been thought. … several basic aspects about the origin and evolution of the domestic dog are still in dispute including several different geographical regions as the proposed birthplace of domestic dogs, and estimations of the date of divergence between wolves and dogs…
