Tracks Swinging Out Must've Been a Sight

dartist: One claimed that he knows a witness that saw the tracks swing out with the train that derailed and another that there is some sort of hook system on the cars and track that engage over certain speeds to prevent derailment.

On Levin? I heard some of that. The tracks swinging out, that must've been a sight, 50mph bend taking 100mph train.

Automated slow-down system described was in the NY subway system. If I got it right, something like this is being installed on major rails, but was not yet installed in the crash area.

Regardless, I presume that trains have been taking bends like that, regularly, for ages, at proper speeds, without incident, since the wild west days of rails. Suggests to me the problem is operator error. Duh.
