Which article led us to Google-map Hawaii, showing that trail of hotspot residue.

Then we were talking about the Marianas Trench, caused by the subduction of the Pacific plate under the Asian plate, and how I read (IIRC) that everything along the edge of the trench could just fall in there any time.
