The Old 78'S

cthulhu #578: ...The old 78's... actually had emery grit mixed into 'em, so they'd sharpen the phonograph needle as they played. You needed to play a couple of records to settle-in a needle, then rotate it every once in a while so it didn't get V-shaped with flat faces.

Wow. That's a new one to me. We were worried about needles damaging LPs. Sounds like 78s wore out needles.

I have a lot of 78s stacked up and a USB phonograph that will run at 78rpm and have thought about trying to transfer them. Maybe I should be worried about the needle getting ground down?
