...When the modern man buys shoes for his spouse...

Ace, I don't recall such a hilarious post in quite a while. Nice comedy!

Browser says the term "metrosexual" appears more than a half-dozen times in comments already, so I don't have to go there.

Two things you quoted were close to pretty good, context notwithstanding.

1. Being between danger and the Mrs. Even in (seemingly) trivial situations, I find myself conscious of positioning like this. Feels silly sometimes, but, then, I've never been called upon (yet) to "try to" defend her.

2. A daughter will teach you things. Not the things that author thinks, of course. Like, for example, having a daughter makes me think more about firearms...!

We found this quirky, silly British SF show on PBS, late at night. Got into watching it, even if we'd often miss an episode and have no idea what was going on.

Then one night, when I'm half-asleep and the other half probably semi-intoxicated, I see the Doctor trip stupidly over his long scarf. He dies, and wakes up as another actor.

The next morning, I was really wondering if that happened. (I had no idea he had been the 4th actor in that role, or that they "regenerated.")

Dr Who - Baker was my first and therefore only, but we've been re-watching the Tennant and Matt Smith episodes. They stand up pretty well - they had fun. The latest guy, I have warmed up to the actor, but the stories just stink.

I suspect the Master took over the writing to destroy the show. The Obama technique.

Not "one." It's the loneliest.

Casual observations while toodling around Chicago includes my first rat sighting (last night, crossing the street in front of us, I nearly ran over him, but missed). He was pretty small, for a city rat.

Bums: the guy with the nice plastic lawn chair and a clearly-printed sign. We're obviously talking upscale professional bumming here.

The bum at the bus stop who, with great difficulty, managed to step into the street and pick up a cig butt that might've still had one hit left on it, maybe. Made it back up the curb without falling.

The guy who looked like "whatever became of Pigpen" (accompanying cloud of dust and all), walking down the street, begging at car windows: I noticed he had a bluetooth ear-thingy!

OTOH, that may be something like the program I proposed long ago of giving fake cell phones to crazies so when they walk down the street mumbling, they can at least look like they're on the phone.

For all my un-PC terminology I delouse myself.

Oh, dear.

I have spent so much effort avoiding even looking at anything that remotely hits at Dunham, and here I succumbed to my curiosity and looked at the picture.

I blame lack of coffee.

Felt like I'd accidentally walked in on a cousin in the bathroom. Not really so much an eye-bleach moment, really, as sadness-inducing. That poor critter!

From the SC officer's murder article Vic posted this a.m.
http://fxn.ws/1OIqZuX

Joan Woodward, 81, lived next door to the officer's parents and said she had known him since he was a baby. She said Wednesday afternoon that she'd just visited with his wife and baby.

"She said she was so fortunate that she had him for that length of time," Woodward said.

She remembered sneaking candy to the officer when he came to her door as a child, and she called him "a special human being."

"When my husband died eight years ago, he was so sweet," she said. "He came and sat with me. God always takes the angels."

Sure seems like it, too many times.

On this day in 1974, I drove from Tulsa to the Ponca City train station to pick up a Chicago gal I'd known in college. She was coming to visit me after extensive persuasion, on her way to visit a sister in Colorado.

She forgot to leave.

Later we got married, but this is the We Got Together anniversary. (Don't tell the kids we shacked up).

Before she left Chicago for the mysterious West, Milady and her sister dined at the Greek Islands. (Enough Roditys and you might get on a train to anywhere.) As it happens, we're in Chicago this week for their recently-late eldest brother's memorial, this weekend. So, last night, 41 years later, her sister and Milady and I dined at the Greek Islands.

But we did not end up on a train to anywhere, Roditys notwithstanding.

A cool Chicago Morning, Glories!

God bless this mess.

That's really funny. However, reminds me more of those dinosaurs in Jurassic Park that had the scary flaps around the head. (Would that I knew my dinos well enough to identify by name.)

Just passing through and decided to drop this on y'all.

Continuing my report from the People's Republic of Chicago, first time here after ten years away.

1 Took me a while to realize one significant change - Bars without smoke! Okay by me, but, damn Big Nanny!

2 What's with the alcohol per volume on beer menus, I wondered? Heard, that was since they changed the rules on beers here. Okay. Never knew there were any.

3 Old folkies still sing kumbaya (or the like) in unison, but boy! are they mostly geriatric. Will the circus be hoboken, by and by, genericdeityconcept, by and by...

More report on some sober(er) morning. Sorry for my cabernet-soaked blather.

Good night, Gracies. Gonna read the post now and retire. More Big City fun in the days ahead!

Greetings, glorious Horde. Jumping in w/o getting caught up on everybody's precious words. Yet.

Yesterday's beautiful day has become today's windy, chilly, drizzle. This is the Chicago I remember!
