It's Your Decision

The lyrics go back to the dark ages before 1976. I've never been real happy with verse 3, and left it out of the mini-comic. I'm also not happy with "endure what derision," and substituted "endure with precision" for a while, but liked that even less after a while. I know, I know, those were the parts you liked best until I griped about 'em, right?

If you have a MIDI player (and you really ought to), check out the tune — my very first MIDI creation. It's a short (less than 1K, about 26 seconds) single-voice, single-note composition, just to give you the basic idea of the tune.

1997 Jan 30: An expanded version of the MIDI tune (~2.5K, 26 sec), adding some more instruments, just for fun. Full-scale orchestration with lead vocal and background chorus will come later….

2001 Nov 26: An even more expanded version of the MIDI tune (~14K, 2:26), all verses, adding many more instruments, and having much more fun. This MIDI was previously only available on the no-longer-unavailable (and now-obsolete) UB Comix diskette. Still haven't actually recorded the song itself yet&hellp;.

Always Up

Here areis my first song of 1997, and my first MIDI creation, too. A bouncy little ditty inspired by a sign on Silver Lake Baptist Church here in Washington County. Mary Jo tells me I'm in good company, as George Harrison's Devil's Radio was also inspired by a church sign.

Verse 5 came out several days later, published again onvarious UB internet mail lists on 1997 Jan 18. A word or two has been changed along the way to this version. Tom Channic composed a verse in response to the first three, which I've placed in its historical position as verse 4, with friend Channic's permission. Sing at your own risk.

The lyrics were composed in about 1975, probably around Christmastime, after I read a review in a Chicago newspaper, the Sun-Times I think, of a then-new book of interviews with people who had been pronounced clinically dead and then revived. I believe the book was Life After Life by Raymond Moody. The reviewer's name I neglected to note.

This is not just about what I read in the article about NDE's, but is also colored by conclusions I'd drawn from reading The Urantia Book, which at the time I had only read twice, and had been studying for but a little over two years. The limerick-like tune was a half-remembered children's song, if you know it: I went to the animal fair, the birds and the beasts were there... something like that, and I don't know who might've written that, either. Or you can substitute any tune you want instead, I don't mind. You're just fortunate you don't have to hear me perform this….
