The question is not whether the quotation from the Byzantine emperor Manuel II Palaeologus is offensive: it is. The question is whether the emperor is justified in what he said. That existed in the 14th century, and was demonstrated on 9/11, 2001. There is every reason to discuss it. I am more afraid of silence than offence... "Show me just what Muhammad brought that was new, and then you shall find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." "So when the sacred months have passed away, Then slay the idolaters wherever you find them. "And take them captive and besiege them, and lie in wait for them in every ambush." Big Nannysuntimes.com/ ... 13:31:52"This Film Is Not Yet Rated" is a catalog of grievances against the MPAA: The membership of the ratings board is anonymous, so the filmmakers have no right to appeal directly to the people who are judging their work. The ratings board is supposed to be comprised of "parents" -- but hardly any have children under 18, which is the only age group to whom the ratings apply. Although the MPAA ratings were allegedly created as a way of heading off government censorship, some say that has always been a ruse -- and, besides, a government system would actually require rules, documentation, transparency, accountability and due process. These are not things the secretive MPAA is fond of. And although the MPAA ratings are supposedly "voluntary," agreements between the studios that fund the organization, the exhibitors who show their films, and the media in which those films are advertised, make it something less than optional for most films. Check your newspaper to see if "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" is playing in your town. If that newspaper accepts advertising for unrated films ("This Film" was originally awarded an NC-17 for "graphic sexual content," but the rating was "surrendered"), you'll see that "This Film" is not playing at one of the studio-owned theater chains. The whole kangaroo court is founded on a doozy of a Catch-22: The MPAA insists that it has procedures that it applies evenhandedly. But the procedures are secret so nobody can tell what they are. If something is not allowed, it's because it's against the invisible rules...

[Eau de irony -- that these Muslims are working so hard to prove the very comments they think they're protesting!] timesofmalta.com/ ... 11:13:32What the Pope delivered was an impassioned and eruditely argued case for religious tolerance. Unfortunately, even though the Islamic religion preaches compassion and charity, many Muslim observers have expressed their fear that fanatics are gaining the upper hand, thus fatally misrepresenting Islam. These fanatics, with Al-Qaeda at the forefront, in fact routinely refer to the West as "Crusaders". The glorification of terrorism, the equation of suicide attacks killing innocent lives (including Muslims) with martyrdom, are an extreme expression of this fanaticism. Another, very troubling, aspect - not limited to a few fanatics but applied by various Islamic states - is the high degree of intolerance shown to members of other faiths. While we in the West are proud of the religious freedom enjoyed by all believers and non-believers, with some Western authorities taking political correctness to extremes (as in the case of a magistrate in Italy who upheld a Muslim activist's request to remove the crucifix from a classroom in an Italian state school), the same freedom cannot be said to apply to native or foreign Christians in predominantly Muslim countries. These Christians face persecution and are the targets of repeated violence...

Reasons for Repealen.wikipedia.org/ ... 18:04:08Many social problems have been attributed to the Prohibition era. A profitable, often violent, black market for alcohol flourished. Racketeering happened when powerful gangs corrupted law enforcement agencies. Stronger liquor surged in popularity because its potency made it more profitable to smuggle. The cost of enforcing prohibition was high, and the lack of tax revenues on alcohol (some $500 million annually nationwide) affected government coffers. When repeal of prohibition occurred in 1933, following passage of the Twenty-first Amendment, organized crime lost nearly all of its black market alcohol profits, due to competition with low-priced alcohol sales at legal liquor stores. Organized crime later adjusted by selling illegal drugs instead. The black market thrives on the sale of any illegal product. On such points as these, the modern "War on Drugs" has been compared to Prohibition, but there is disagreement on the validity of this comparison...
