World of Culturesen.wikipedia.org/ ... 12:07:41In Britain and countries of the British Empire, Old Style or O.S. after a date means that the date is in the Julian calendar, in use in those countries until 1752; New Style or N.S. means that the date is in the Gregorian calendar, adopted on 14 September 1752 (New Style). For example, it is sometimes remarked that William Shakespeare and Miguel de Cervantes died on the same date, 23 April 1616, but not on the same day. England was still using Old Style dating in 1616, while Spain was using New Style. Cervantes actually died ten days before Shakespeare... A further complication is that the start of the Julian year was not always January 1st but was altered at different times in different countries. For a long time the year in England began on 25 March (Lady Day), so for example Elizabeth I of England was recorded as having died on 24 March 1602 (Old Style); this would be written 24 March 1603 in the modern system of numbering years...

The name Sacagawea will honor the Lemhi Shoshone woman who acted as guide and interpreter for Lewis and Clark on their expedition into the Northwest region of the United States. This well documented expedition of two years and 6,000 miles opened routes to vast new territories throughout the American West which allowed passage for American settlers and traders. Legendary for her perseverance and resourcefulness, Sacagawea (1788-1812) provided invaluable assistance to the explorers through her knowledge of topography and edible roots and plants previously unknown to European-Americans. She single-handedly saved the expedition's records after they had fallen into the Missouri River when their canoe capsized. If she had not rescued these journals, much of the record of the first year of the expedition would have been lost to history. This act demonstrated her dedication to the journey's success.... Lucy Honena Diaz and Rachael Lynne Ariwite, familial descendants of Sacagawea, will serve as co-sponsors of the ship.... Amy Mossett, a Mandan-Hidatsa member of the Three Affiliated Tribes of North Dakota, will serve as honorary matron of honor.... 689 feet in length, has an overall beam of 105 feet, a navigational draft of 30 feet, and displaces approximately 42,000 tons. Powered by a single-shaft diesel-electric propulsion system, the ship can reach a speed of 20 knots. Designed to operate independently for extended periods at sea while providing replenishment services to U.S., NATO and allied ships, the USNS Sacagawea will directly contribute to the ability of the Navy to maintain a worldwide forward presence.

US Militarylittlegreenfootballs.com/ ... 09:21:22We’ve been watching this develop, as earlier today the Council on American Islamic Relations sent out one of their infamous email alerts about an amateur music video of a song about a Marine lured into an ambush by a “Hadji girl.” At this point there’s no verification that the singer is a Marine, although it looks authentic. And now, right on cue, mainstream media is parroting the completely bogus claims of the Council on American Islamic Relations (CAIR). The Associated Press version: Video on Marine killing Iraqis draws ire. The BBC version: ‘Kill Iraqis marine song’ probe. Both of these accounts repeat CAIR’s blatant falsehood, that the song in the video tells a story about a Marine killing Iraqi civilians. It does not. The BBC’s version: The lyrics caught on video refer to the shooting of Iraqi civilians, especially children. True, but incomplete. And the part they leave out is damning: the lyrics refer to killings of children by Iraqi insurgents. Not by Marines. Both the BBC and the AP seem to have missed this minor detail. US Election 2008csmonitor.com/ ... 17:46:08this time there's a twist: A bunch of states team up and give all their electoral college votes to the nationwide popular-vote winner, regardless of who won the most votes in their state. Then, the candidate who garners the most citizen votes in the country moves into the White House. Legislative houses in Colorado and California have recently approved this plan, known as the National Popular Vote proposal, taking it partway to passage. Other states, too, are exploring the idea of a binding compact among states that would oblige each of them to throw its electoral votes behind the national popular-vote winner. At issue is the nation's presidential election system governed by the electoral college. Established by the US Constitution in 1787, the system has occasionally awarded the presidency to candidates who couldn't muster the most votes nationwide, as happened in 1824, 1876, 1888, and 2000...

U.S. Army Medical Corps Capt. Vladimir M. Sasko, Chicago.
Cameron will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington, D.C., on Friday. Sasko was buried in December in Chicago, and final arrangements for Cunningham have yet to be confirmed.
On Dec. 10, 1944, a C-47 crewed by Cameron and Cunningham took off from Dobudura, New Guinea, on a cargo flight to Hollandia with three passengers aboard, including Sasko. Forty minutes into the flight the crew radioed a request for weather information. Another pilot in the area replied that the weather was bad, saying he was headed out to sea to avoid it. After that, there was no further contact with the Cameron crew.
Search teams in the area from the Royal Australian Air Force were unsuccessful in finding the crash site. In 1979 and 1980, search and recovery teams from the U.S. Army's Central Identification Laboratory, Hawaii (CILHI) found the site and recovered remains subsequently identified... as those of 2nd Lt. Stanley D. Campbell of Pioche, Nev., and Cpl. Carl A. Drain, hometown unknown. In October and November 2004 a team from the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC)... excavated the site in Morobe Province, Papua New Guinea, where they recovered human remains and personal effects of the remaining airmen. JPAC scientists and Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory specialists used mitochondrial DNA as one of the forensic tools to help identify the remains. Laboratory analysis of dental remains also confirmed their identification.
