…On this day in 1932 World War I veterans began to assemble in Washington, D.C., in the Bonus Army to request cash bonuses promised to them to be paid in 1945. Hoover ordered the Army to clear the camp and MacArthur did so, with fixed bayonets, tear gas and later shooting. Two of the vets and 1 child were killed in the eviction. Hoover ordered MacArthur to stop the attack and MacArthur ignored him.
