Broken LinkCouple indicted for giving baby cocaine, using drugs around baby
http://www.chron.com/cs/CDA/story.hts/metropolitan/1644724
The prohibitionists would be aghast at this, but I would file this case under "cultures in conflict." A little cocaine used to be considered medically safe even for babies, recommended for teething, and other ailments. The accusations also include "dealing drugs with baby in arms." This is "inexcusable" according to a Prohibitionist policeman, but just what is the actual harm of dealing drugs while a baby is around? Now, the alleged exposure to secondhand pot smoke could be somewhat harmful, but tobacco would be worse and no one gets prosecuted for smoking that crap around babies. Yes, drug-addled parents could be inattentive, but no charge of any actual harm to the baby was cited, although it did test positive for coke. The father denies the charges, calls witnesses liars. "Anybody who would do that is wrong." Sigh!

Oregon medical marijuana prescriptions doubles over past year
Patients must have "debilitating medical condition" such as cancer, glaucoma, AIDS or severe pain. If you use it for recreational or sacramental purposes, or don't have quite that debilitating a medical condition, you're out of luck, of course. DOCTOR SAYS: "Every patient I see says medical marijuana works better than (other) drugs for them. Would they lie to me about that? I don't think so."

Mexican Generals Guilty in Landmark Drug Trial
Corruption may always be with us, but it's more common when you have vice laws — if I presume correctly that many are more likely to justify their corruption over "victimless" crimes than over true crimes like murder and theft. If there were no drug laws to violate, there would be no drug gangs. Vice laws dishonor the true rule of law.

Debate over medical marijuana use hits home for MS-afflicted man
Man finds otherwise impossible relief from pot, which he grows and consumes legally: "It kills the pain, it gives me quality of life." Doesn't hide it, isn't ashamed of it, but, the article says, he "admits it can be a little confusing when a police presentation at school tells his daughter that marijuana is bad." Gee, why would irrational, irresponsible prohibitionist propaganda propounded in the schools be confusing?

Mexican gangster drug cartels taking over California pot growing from "hippies"

THE PAINFULLY SLOW, HALTING PROCESS TOWARD GRUDGING, WHINING ACCEPTANCE OF HUMAN LIBERTY

BAD GUYS SMOKE POT, TOO
In the category "not helpful to the cause" are all the cases where genuine criminality is associated with cannabis consumption. Rarely do we see pot alone being used, as other drugs are usually in the mix, or there are other obvious problems with the individual. Pot's effect has a reputation among some as peaceable, but bad guys smoke pot, too, proving that it's the individual, not the substance, that determines how the "high" (or "low") will be used:

2002-Oct-31 Mobile AL (wpmi.com): Thirty people indicted for using day care center as marijuana distribution center
File this last one under "not helpful to the cause" of making potheads acceptable to the average ignoramus on the street. One important factor about this story is the manner and value of the law's confiscation, proving once again there are some not-so-hidden agendas.

2002-Oct-31 Arizona (AP)
Arizona Proposition 203 provisions
Legalization, it's so simple, and yet they make it so complex-seeming. "Decriminalization" is always done piecemeal; quantity limits are just half-assed cowardice. Like saying it's okay to own and drink beer, but illegal to have an entire six-pack in your fridge. But having the police providing medical pot out of confiscations of recreational pot? That's utterly ludicrous! Just get the government OUT of the drug business entirely. Equally absurd is increasing penalties for committing crimes while "under the influence." Either it's a crime, punishable because of what you did, or it's not. The influences are irrelevant. But then there are hidden agendas after all.

2002-Oct-31 Columbus, Ohio (NBC4 Columbus)
Responding to burglar alarm, cops see drugs, money, guns
and although all those things should in and of themselves be legal, the residents were busted. Nevertheless, it's never helpful to the cause when dealers have guns, and if you have a bunch of contraband sitting out in plain sight and a burglar alarm, maybe you should be arrested for stupidity. We always suspect, however, whether the cops really only "peeked through a window" to find contraband "in plain sight."
